Winter Wellness: Staying Active in Boulder, Colorado in the New Year-image

Winter in Boulder brings fresh air, snow-covered trails, and a slower seasonal rhythm. While shorter days may tempt you to hibernate, the New Year is the perfect time to embrace movement that supports both physical and mental health. Luckily, Boulder provides plenty of options to stay active all winter long. Whether you're setting new fitness goals or just looking for ways to stay active during colder months, here are some of the best ways to embrace winter wellness in Boulder. Embrace Outdoor Winter Activities Boulder’s outdoor culture doesn’t stop when temperatures dip. In fact, winter opens the door to a new range of activities that keep you moving while enjoying the scenery. Common choices include: Snowshoeing at Chautauqua Park or Brainard Lake Winter hiking on trails like Mount Sanitas, Betasso Preserve, and Wonderland Lake Cross-country skiing in the nearby Nederland and Eldora areas Many trails stay accessible all year with proper footwear and traction. Going outside, even for a quick walk, can lift your mood, boost energy, and help you stay consistent with your activity during winter. Take Advantage of Indoor Fitness Studios When snow or cold weather makes outdoor workouts less appealing, Boulder’s fitness scene offers plenty of indoor options. From strength training to mindfulness-based movement, there is something for everyone. Look for studios offering: Yoga and heated yoga classes Pilates and barre workouts Strength training and group fitness classes Climbing gyms like Movement Boulder for a full-body workout Many studios launch New Year class packages or wellness challenges, making the first few months of the year a great time to try something new. Stay Social Through Movement Staying active is easier when it also serves as a social activity. Boulder has a vibrant community centered on group fitness, outdoor meetups, and recreational sports. Ideas to explore: Winter running or walking groups Group hikes organized through local clubs Recreational leagues for indoor sports Wellness events hosted by gyms or community centers Connecting with others through movement helps maintain motivation while developing healthy routines that last beyond winter. Prioritize Recovery and Balance Winter wellness is not just about staying active. Recovery is also essential, especially when days are colder and muscles feel tighter. Balance your activity with: Stretching and mobility sessions Sauna or hot tub time after workouts Massage or bodywork from local practitioners Adequate rest and hydration Listening to your body helps prevent burnout and maintains a sustainable fitness routine over time. Make Wellness Part of Your Boulder Lifestyle Living in Boulder offers unique chances to prioritize health all year long. Winter becomes an opportunity to adjust your routine instead of stopping it. By blending outdoor activities, indoor workouts, and deliberate recovery, you can start the New Year feeling strong, grounded, and energized. If you are new to Boulder or thinking about making it your home, our city’s focus on wellness is part of what makes the lifestyle here so attractive, even in the heart of winter. Beat the Winter Blues: Self-Care Tips for Apartment Living-image

The winter can feel long and heavy. Shorter days, colder weather, and post-holiday tiredness frequently combine to create the winter blues. When you live in an apartment, limited space and reduced outdoor time can make that feeling even more noticeable. The good news is that small, intentional self-care habits can make a real difference. Here are simple, realistic ways to improve your well-being during the winter months, without needing a big lifestyle overhaul. Create a Lighter, Cozier Home Environment Natural light is limited in winter, so your indoor environment is more important than ever. Open blinds during the day, even on cloudy days, to maximize the available light. In the evenings, opt for warm, soft lighting instead of harsh overhead lights. Adding cozy textures like blankets, rugs, or throw pillows can make your apartment feel warmer and more inviting during colder weeks. Stick to a Gentle Routine Winter often disrupts routines, but maintaining a flexible daily schedule can boost mood and energy. Aim to wake up and go to bed at consistent times, even on weekends. Incorporate small daily rituals, such as morning stretching, a midday walk, or an evening wind-down, to create stability without added stress. Move Your Body (Even in Small Spaces) You don’t need a full home gym to stay active. Short movement breaks, yoga, body-weight exercises, or guided stretching videos can be done right in your living room. Even 10–15 minutes a day can help reduce stress, boost circulation, and strengthen your mental health clarity. Emphasize Mental and Emotional Wellness Apartment living can feel lonely during winter, especially when social plans slow down. Make an effort to stay connected; schedule phone calls, invite a friend over, or attend local events when you can. Journaling, meditation apps, or simply unplugging from constant notifications can also help clear mental clutter and boost focus. Support Your Body with Professional Care Sometimes self-care involves seeking additional support. Bodywork, massage therapy, acupuncture, and other healing services can help you reset physically and mentally as winter progresses. Here are some great local options in and around the area to explore: Local Wellness & Bodywork Providers Niwot Massage – A highly rated massage therapist offering integrative bodywork that revitalizes both body and mind; excellent for ease and stress relief. Boulder Cupping Therapy – Offers massage with cupping techniques, great for muscle tension and circulation. Boulder Bliss – A local spa perfect for a pampering session after a long week. The NOW Massage Boulder – Popular and well-reviewed massage spa that’s ideal for stress-reducing bodywork. Boulder Nuad Thai Massage Spa – Offers Thai massage and bodywork for deeper relaxation and flexibility. Boulder Therapeutics – Combines massage and acupuncture with movement therapy and thorough care. OPEX Element 6 – A Boulder-based coaching and training facility that takes a holistic approach to health. Their focus on personalized movement, mindset, and lifestyle support makes them an excellent option for residents looking to rebuild consistency, strength, and energy during the winter months. These providers offer a range of services, from gentle relaxation to therapeutic deep-tissue and alternative modalities, helping you find the approach that best fits your needs. Be Kind to Yourself This Season Winter doesn’t have to be about pushing yourself harder or fixing everything all at once. It’s okay to slow down, rest more, and focus on what helps you feel steady and supported. Small choices, made consistently, add up over time. By creating a comfortable home environment, maintaining simple routines, keeping in touch, and discovering nearby self-care options, apartment living in winter can seem easier to handle and more balanced. The winter blues don’t have to last all season. The Habitat Apartments are located in Gunbarrel, offering convenient access to shopping in Boulder and beyond. A Fab February: Events Sure to Cure Your Holiday Hangover-image

With the holidays behind us, spring still distant, and the sun setting before the evening news, it can be tough to feel excited about the start of a new year. Fortunately, several local events are sure to make February feel a bit more fabulous. Three of our favorites include the following:   2026 Stout Fest Just in time for stout month, Avery Brewing’s 2nd annual Stout Fest is back on Sunday, February 1st from 4-8 PM. Enjoy barrel-aged favorites like Tweak, food pairings, a deep dive into stouts with Avery’s lead innovation brewer, plus giveaways. Tickets are limited, so grab yours early. Flatiron Freddy   Flatiron Freddy is a Groundhog Day tradition held on February 2 at the Chautauqua Ranger Cottage. Join other groundhog fans or watch the livestream online to see if Flatiron Freddy’s shadow shows up. Fun fact: The first Groundhog Day took place in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, on February 2, 1887. Its roots, however, date back to ancient times, particularly Celtic weather rituals.  Boozy Bingo Tournament   B as in bourbon, I as in IPA, N as in nightcap, G as in gin, and O as in old-fashioned! The Barrel , located in Estes Park, is hosting a boozy bingo tournament every Wednesday night in February. From 6-9pm, these tournaments feature various themes, including the Super Bowl, Be My Valentine, the Rocky Mountains, and Apres Ski. If bingo isn’t your thing, the bar hosts all kinds of other events like tastings and BBQ nights.  Disco Skate Night    Get ready to sparkle, glide, and groove at Disco Skate Night, the ultimate throwback party where skating meets serious dance-floor energy! Grab your friends, dust off that disco fit, and head to the Avalon Ballroom on Tuesday, February 10th from 7:00-9:30 PM for an adults-only (18+) night of funky fun. Skate your heart out, then take a break to boogie on the elevated dance floor (no wheels allowed there, just pure disco vibes). It’s a sober-friendly event, with limited rental skates available if you reserve ahead, plus multiple ticket options, whether you’re skating, dancing, or doing both. Tickets are available online or at the door, but don’t wait–this glittery night is bound to roll fast! A Very Emo Valentine’s Night   Taking place on Valentine’s Day Eve (which happens to be Friday the 13th this year), A Very Emo Valentine’s Night turns the Bounce Empire in Lafayette into an adult playground. Running from 10pm-2am, this 18+ event invites guests to dress in their best emo attire and bring their singing voices. The night will feature crowd favorites, emo anthems, and mosh-pit-worthy hits, along with drink and food specials. Tickets are $15 online.   February doesn’t have to feel like dreaduary. What is Dry January?-image

December might have been all about decorating the halls and raising your champagne glass, but January offers a more sober vibe. In fact, Dry January is embraced by more people each year, giving you (and your liver) a chance to take a break.   What Is Dry January? Dry January is a wellness challenge that encourages people to abstain from alcohol for a whole month. Starting January 1st and lasting through the 31st, participants avoid beer, grimace at wine, and take a firm stand against hard liquor.   Dry January offers participants a chance to reset after overindulging during the holidays and start the year on a healthy note. It's an initiative that aligns well with New Year’s resolutions, often focused on wellness, making it more appealing to those committed to their goals.      How Did Dry January Begin?   While many people have made giving up alcohol a New Year's Day tradition for what feels like forever, Dry January officially started in the UK. It began with 4,000 participants in 2013 and has grown each year. Today, it’s believed that millions of people take part, but because there are no official records, the exact number remains unknown.    The concept of Dry January also has roots in history. In 1942 , Finland introduced Sober January to aid its war efforts against the Soviets (though this was due to wartime necessity rather than health concerns).  Where To Celebrate Dry January in Boulder   Nearly every bar, pub, and restaurant offers nonalcoholic options on their menus. Some even have a great mocktail game!    In Boulder, a handful of places are known for delicious drinks that blackball Bacardi, void vodka, and dodge Dewar’s without skimping on festivity. These include the following:   Avanti Gemini The Rayback Collective The Root Kava Bar OAK at Fourteenth If Dry January feels like too big a commitment, try Damp January instead. With this, you don’t have to completely avoid alcohol; just cut back as much as you’re comfortable with. Even a small break can make a difference!
